More Than Forgiveness

Product Number: DOD1815
Israel--the land of the Bible. Here almost 2000 years ago, a Jewish rabbi taught his followers that if they didn't forgive one another, neither would God forgive them. The teacher was Jesus of Nazareth. The setting: a region marked for thousands of years by ethnic strife, religious conflict, and endless cycles of revenge. In modern Israel, Jewish and Arab populations both lay claim to the family line and inheritance of Abraham. And both believe that they have been unjustly wronged by the other. Here in a culture that demanded "an eye for an eye" Jesus taught his followers to love and forgive one another. But is such teaching realistic in a world where the roots of conflict go so deep and where the harm done to one another is so painful and real?

The film seems to imply that without repentance there cannot or should not be forgiveness. But on the cross our Lord forgave those that executed him, and Steven asked forgiveness for those that were stoning him to death.

Thank God He forgave us before we asked for it. You say Love is better than forgiveness but how can you say that when the very definition of Love (1 Cor. 13) includes forgiveness. Forgiveness + Repentance = Relationship which is what God desires to have with us, but He Loved (forgave) us BEFORE we repented. Jesus' very statement on the cross was "Father forgive them for they know not what they do". You have a potentially dangerous interpretation of scripture by isolating a verse which is about the very essence of forgiveness and saying that it implies that if your brother does not ask for forgiveness then you are not called to forgive. I do not believe that is biblical. Jesus says Love your enemy and keeping no records of wrongs (forgiveness) is in the very definition of love. So if we must forgive (Love) our enemies who don't repent, of course we must forgive our brothers who don't repent. But there is no relationship. Yes, very thought provoking!
